Leadership speaker and coach Jamy Bechler was a keynote speaker at the Mississippi Association of Athletics Administration conference held on January 10-13 at the IP Casino and Resort in Biloxi, Mississippi. Bechler spoke to coaches, athletic administrators, principals and superintendents about the qualities that it takes to be a successful leader. As a longtime college basketball coach and high school athletic director, Bechler provided the audience with positive strategies to develop leadership among their staffs and student-athletes.
“Jamy’s knowledge and expertise on both of his topics was excellent”, said MAAA Executive Director, Woody Barnett. “His presentations were very informative and with a touch of humor kept the attendee’s attention. He provided the attendees with many ideas and strategies to take back and use in their own situations. Hopefully we’ll be able to have him back in the near future”
Bechler presented twice during the conference. He spoke on the topics of “Dealing with Challenging Personalities” and “Positive Uses of Social Media”. He discussed finding common ground and working toward win-win solutions. He also discussed how social media can be a positive light that can be used for good, and how leaders to can use social media to brand themselves in a positive light.
“This was a great event”, said Bechler. “It was encouraging to see so many leaders with a desire to help young people. All leaders have to recharge their batteries sometimes and this conference was a great resource to do that.”
The 19th annual MAAA conference lasted three days that included a luncheon, acknowledgment of athletic administrators, program’s history and recognition of athletic programs with outstanding work of the schools from all over Mississippi. The conferences consisted of more than 200 athletic administrators and leaders from across the state of Mississippi and MAAA staff. In addition to Bechler, other speakers included Richard Williams, former head coach at Mississippi State University and Kevin Brown of the “Heads Up Football Program.”
The MAAA is made up of athletic administrators from across the state of Mississippi. They are an organization under the umbrella of the Mississippi High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) and governed by the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrator’s Association (NIAAA). They are led by Executive Director Woody Barnett. The MAAA provide resources and training programs to their members.
