A young girl was walking along a beach where thousands of starfish had been washed up during a storm. When she came to each starfish, she would pick it up, and throw it back into the ocean.

Eventually, a man approached her and said, “Little girl, why are you doing this? Look at this beach! You can’t save all these starfish. You can’t begin to make a difference!”
The girl bent down, picked up another starfish, and hurled it as far as she could into the ocean. Then she looked up at the man and replied, “Well, I made a difference for that one!”
Whitney Houston sang, “I believe that children are our future. Teach them well and let them lead the way.”
This is so true! Our youth are the future and if we want a strong community, then it’s important that we focus on their upbringing.
As parents, educators, business people, and leaders we must…
- Model appropriate behaviors
- Be intentional about developing our youth
We must all take ownership of this process and do what we can. Just like the little girl, it may not seem like much, but everything matters. Everyone matters.
We might not be able to do everything, but we can do something.
We might not be able to help everyone, but we can help someone.
To those of you already investing in the lives of young people, thank you. Keep it up. It is worth it.
Frederick Douglass said, “It is easier to build up strong children than it is to repair broken men.”
Each of us can do something to build up a strong child. It might look differently for each of us, but each of us can do something.
