Martin Luther King, Jr. Day will be a busy day for Jamy Bechler.
The former college basketball coach is now considered one of the nation’s top experts in the area of athletic leadership and culture.
On the day Americans celebrate one of their greatest leaders, Martin Luther King, Jr., Bechler will be conducting five different leadership webinars on Monday, January 18th in honor of his legacy.
All of the virtual webinars are free to attend but registration is required since spots are limited.
Here is the schedule for Monday’s webinars (click on topic to register)
- 1:00pm ET – “Building Culture Through Recruiting”
- 3:00pm ET – “Developing Team Leadership”
- 5:00pm ET – “Effective Communication for Staff, Players & Parents”
- 7:00pm ET – “Selecting & Developing Captains”
- 9:00pm ET – “Team-Building Ideas During COVID”
“The sessions each cover a different topic but they are really all designed with the same end game”, said Bechler. “I want to more student-athletes to develop into better teammates, positive leaders, and people of influence. I want teams to have positive and healthy cultures. It’s going to be fun talking with coaches from all different parts of the country, from different backgrounds, and from different sports.”
Each presentation will be live and will last about 45 minutes with an additional 10-15 minutes for audience Q&A.
“Martin Luther King, Jr. has always been one of my heroes. Seeing the way he fought for what he believed in while demonstrating love, respect, and wisdom has always been impressive. When I coached basketball, we’d always try to do community service on MLK day since we typically had no school. I thought the day was perfect for giving back, volunteering, and making the world a little bit better. Even though I am not coaching anymore, I thought this was a way that I could help those leaders that work with our youth. It’s a way to make the world a little bit better.”
After a successful run as a college basketball coach and high school athletic director, Bechler started his own leadership consulting business to help develop future leaders. His primary focus is on athletics and education.
“Judging people by the content of their character rather than the color of their skin is so important”, said Bechler. “It’s such a great statement. Seeing the good in people, choosing love, and doing what’s right even when it’s uncomfortable is what good leaders do.”
The John Maxwell certified leadership coach trains individuals to understand that leadership isn’t just about titles, positions, status, or authority but about influence. He emphasizes that everyone can be a leader because everyone can influence somebody. Bechler believes that how coaches lead athletes now can shape the future – both positively or negatively.
“The great abolitionist Frederick Douglass once said, that it’s easier to build strong children than it is to repair broken men”, Bechler continued. “My goal is to help build up strong children and help strengthen our future by working with today’s leaders. By helping athletic directors and coaches improve their leadership, in turn our young people have a better chance of becoming good leaders themselves.”
