Motivational speaker Jamy Bechler traveled in late February from his Atlanta headquarters to spend the day with student-athletes and coaches at George Fox University in Oregon.
He is a John Maxwell Leadership Team Member. John Maxwell, who has written more than 100 books, is generally considered the top leadership expert in the world.
Bechler spent some time on the morning and afternoon of February 22nd meeting with some of the Bruins’ coaches 1-on-1 and as a group. He also received a tour of the beautiful campus and facilities from Craig Taylor, the Bruins Athletic Director.
When Bechler met with the coaches as a large group, he spoke about building and maintaining a Championship Culture. He emphasized the importance of knowing the purpose of why each coach does what they do and then understanding how to connect with each of their athletes. He stressed that a program’s culture is reinforced daily with both the players and the coaching staff.
“In our large group meeting, Jamy was able to summarize many important elements of coaching into a short one hour presentation”, said George Fox University’s softball coach Jessica Hollen. Afterwards, he was more than willing to stay and talk individually to coaches to help them synthesize and process the information more thoroughly.”
After spending time with the coaches, he met with the student-athletes that evening. During that session, he presented the idea that each student-athlete is the CEO of their brand. They get to decide what they will say about themselves and the message they portray to the outside world, in particular through the use of social media.
He utilized current examples of both positive and negative social media stories to emphasize the message of student-athletes branding themselves. He also interacted frequently with the audience so that they stayed engaged.
George Fox University is located in Newberg, Oregon and has an undergraduate enrollment of 2,400 students. The athletic teams have been very successful competing at the NCAA-III level with recent National Championships in Baseball and Women’s Basketball.
