Our Daily Commute

“All battles are first won or lost in the mind.” (Joan of Arc)

πŸ”Š Click here to listen to the 2-minute audio of today’s email about our daily commute.

The American commute is getting longer and longer.

According to a Washington Post article, the average American spends a total of 52 minutes commuting to and from work each day.

That’s 9 full days a year.

This is a terrible way to live.

People hate their commutes more than just about any other activity in their lives.

A study was conducted of a group of women in Texas to rate how they felt during various daily activities and found that the morning commute came in dead last in terms of positive emotions, behind work, child care, and home chores.

For many of us when we are in traffic, we either get frustrated at things we can’t control or we listen to mindless radio – like music or talk radio. Most of the talk radio really should be called yell radio instead of talk radio.

Either way, we are wasting an opportunity.

Our commute is a perfect opportunity to prepare for the day and get ready to make the day the best possible. How will we brighten someone’s day or be positive at the office if we’re in a negative frame of mind to start with?

The ride home is another perfect opportunity to potentially get better. We can use this time to leave the stress and worries of work behind and even start to get focused on our family.

For some of us, we need plenty of time to get ourselves mentally ready to be totally present for our family.

Let’s try to use our “downtime” commute to get our minds in a positive place.

If we have any kind of commute at all, let’s look at it as an opportunity and not an inconvenience.

Who knows, maybe we’ll even get less frustrated at the red lights and appreciate the green lights more.

If nothing else, our commute can be a great chance to catch up on past Success is a choice podcast episodes.πŸ˜€
