Meeting with the Coach

My senior research project was to examine whether John Wooden’s coaching style could work in the current landscape of college men’s basketball. I made appointments to meet six different head coaches at their office for a 30-minute interview.

Every coach gave me some great insights and I received an “A” on the project.

Other than Coach Wooden calling me on my dorm room phone (but that’s another story for another day), the thing that stands out to me the most about the project was one particular coach and how he treated me.

Oh?!?

A man and his wife had been arguing all night, and as bedtime approached neither was speaking to the other.

It was not unusual for the pair to continue this war of silence for two or three days. However, on this occasion the man was concerned; he needed to be awake at 4:30am the next morning to catch an important flight and being a very heavy sleeper, he normally relied on his wife to wake him.

Cleverly (so he thought), while his wife was in the bathroom, he wrote on a piece of paper: “Please wake me at 4:30am – I have an important flight to catch.”

He put the note on his wife’s pillow, then turned over and went to sleep.

Bechler Speaking in Florida

The Manatee County Fellowship of Christian Athletes is pleased to announce that one of the nation’s top experts on leadership and teamwork will be speaking in Bradenton on Saturday, October 23rd.

The event will take place from 12:30-2:00pm at the Youth for Christ’s 180 House.

Jamy Bechler is the host of the “Success is a Choice” podcast and is a certified John Maxwell Leadership Coach. He has also written three books, including The Leadership Playbook. His fourth book, The Captain, is set to be released this Thanksgiving.

Saturday’s topic will be “Influencing Today’s Generation of Kids.”

Episode 026: ESPN.com Fantasy Football Senior Editor Keith Lipscomb

Keith Lipscomb has been at ESPN.com for 20 years. He is currently the Senior Editor for Fantasy Football. He has served many roles through the years, including editor, writer, on-air talent and podcast host for the ESPN Fantasy editorial team. He works closely with the Fantasy Focus Football 06010 podcast that is hosted by Matthew Berry, Field Yates, and Stephania Bell. This podcast is regularly listed among Apple’s Top-100 most downloaded podcasts. Keith has been an editor for Sports Nation and one of ESPN’s NBA researchers. He writes an article every year prior to the NCAA Tournament that outlines all the information that you need to know for completing your March Madness brackets. He was a star baseball player and communications major at Hiram (OH) College prior to going into journalism full-time.
