Why Do Employees Leave?

This is a guest post from Dr. Keith Starcher, a long-time college professor and business consultant. Most importantly, he is the father of my wife, which makes him a big-deal.

“Employees don’t leave their organizations; they leave their supervisors.”

When I first was introduced to the above statement, I disagreed with it.  But after reading the book First, Break All the Rules (What the World’s Greatest Managers Do Differently) by Marcus Buckingham and Curt Coffman, my thinking has changed.

Kay & Shi (Kay Salerno & Shila Morris) are dynamic and entertaining entrepreneurs with fascinating stories. When Kay and Shila were 10 and 17, their parents quit their careers and “bet it all” to buy a tiny breakfast restaurant in a California ski town. As they became adults, they joined the ownership and helped grow the business into a national brand featured on Food Network and in the New York Times. With Mom and Dad now retired, Kay and Shila lead the business as it serves millions of guests across multiple states each year. Often recognized for their unique marketing strategies and dedication to development Kay and Shila find that their love for each other fuels their drive and success.

Since 2015 Kay and Shila have shared their stories and strategies as speakers and podcasts hosts, and as the marketing faculty for leadership expert and bestselling author John Maxwell’s global team of speakers, coaches and trainers. They love to serve delightful experiences with results-oriented focus and simple, actionable takeaways. Inspiration One Step at a Time

I received a surprise message from Dion Harris.

If that name sounds familiar, it’s because he was the former Mr. Basketball in the state of Michigan and then went on to be All-Big Ten and 2x MVP for the University of Michigan. He would go on to have a successful professional career overseas. He now trains and mentors youngsters in the Detroit area.

Anyway, back to the message…

Do Something About It

Why doesn’t someone help those poor people?”

“When is someone going to clean up the trash in the hallway?”

“What is the boss going to do about advertising our event?”

“If only we had more money in our budget, think of all we could do”

“I wish I had more time in a day, then I could really accomplish some great things.”

We all do it.  We all complain, make suggestions or wonder aloud.

Leaders are Responsible

This is a guest post from Dr. Keith Starcher, a long-time college professor and business consultant. Most importantly, he is the father of my wife, which makes him a big-deal.

Leaders are responsible for the choices they make.  Many of a leader’s choices involve tough decisions and difficult actions.  Leaders must have the courage to do what they think is right and be willing to accept the consequences of their choices.
