Just Bring The Ship In

“Don’t tell me how rough the water is, just bring the ship in”.

I first saw this quote on Kobe Bryant’s twitter feed a few years ago as a “Mambo-ism”.  I don’t know who originally said this but I have said similar things for years.  Among them is the one quote that my players always rolled their eyes at ‘Don’t tell me about the labor pains, just show me the baby.’

What a Leader is Not

“It is better to stay silent and be thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt.” (Abe Lincoln)
“If the mailman stopped to kick every dog that barked at him, he’d never deliver the mail.” (Roy Williams, Hall of Fame Basketball Coach)

My 7-year old son was mad yesterday.  He was carrying on in a way that many of us have seen before when a young child is really tired and is not getting his way.  [Read more…]

4 Reasons Your Boss is an Idiot

“Leaders become great, not because of their power, but because of their ability to empower others.”  (John C. Maxwell)

We all have a boss. Even the President of the U.S. has “We The People” that he has to answer to. Many of us complain about our boss. Unfortunately, not all bosses are top-shelf. If you happen to be a boss, you also might want to read this so that you can stop doing some of this stuff if you are guilty of it.

LOL Chicago Bulls Part 2

“Discipline yourself and others won’t need to.” (John Wooden)
“He who angers you, controls you.” (Elizabeth Kenny)

The 2017-18 NBA Season is still a day away for the Chicago Bulls but you are probably already laughing out loud and shaking your head about ‘da Bulls.

But the LOL I am referring to is a LACK OF LEADERSHIP.

It’s deja vu all over again. I wrote about the Chicago Bulls last season and their lack of leadership. I pointed out how the star players were not leading like they should. I still believe 100% that was the case.

Now we have a Chicago Bulls power forward punching another Chicago Bulls power forward. Nikola Mirotic is in the hospital with a concussion and a broken face as a result of teammate Bobby Portis’ punch.

March Madness Underdogs

March Madness is upon us and people are getting ready to fill out those pesky brackets.  We love this time of year because of the drama and possibilities that exist when Davids meet Goliaths.  Will this finally be the year that a 16-seed defeats a 1-seed?  Who will make it to the Final Four?  What team will become the Cinderella story of the story?  Who will be cutting down the nets when “One Shining Moment” is playing on CBS? Who will be the underdogs you will be rooting for?

LOL Chicago Bulls

“The main ingredient to stardom is the rest of the team.” (Coach John Wooden)
“A leader is one who knows the way, shows the way and goes the way” (John C. Maxwell)

Have you seen the Chicago Bulls recently?  LOL

Be a Star in your Role

“Be a star in your role, and for me, that’s high-energy, use my motor, just play hard. Play hard, be relentless on the glass. And that’s what I bring to this team. That’s my job. Just be a star in your role, and I try to do that every night.” (Tristan Thompson)

Tristan Thompson’s huge double-double in Game 6 of the 2016 NBA Finals and unselfish play in all of the games helped lead the Cleveland Cavs to the World Championship.  Good thing for Cavs fans and players that he didn’t pout about his boring and un-glamorous role.  He might not be Lebron James, but he can now call himself a CHAMPION!

Many of us are in positions or roles that we don’t like.  Some of us are in leadership positions where we have disgruntled team members.  I want tell you a little story.  A story that I don’t think I will ever forget.

The Daily Routine to Change your Life

“No matter who you are, no matter what you did, no matter where you’ve come from, you can always change, become a better version of yourself.”  (Madonna)

I am probably just as surprised as you are that I started this post with a quote from Madonna.   But hey, I gotta say that she was an underrated actress, an outspoken social critic and she  had some great songs (like “Get in the Groove”, which helped me win a dance contest in 7th grade . . . but I digress).
