Motivational Minute: Losing Your Legs

“Positive people plus positive energy create positive results.” (Jon Gordon)

Retired Army staff sergeant Joey Jones lost both of his legs when an IED exploded in Afghanistan.

Click here to listen to the 1-minute audio version of this article.
He has said that sometimes people will ask him how he stays so positive about life even though he doesn’t have his legs.
Sometimes he’ll just shake his head and wonder how they can be so negative about life even though they have both of their legs.

Honor Them

“There is nothing wrong with America that cannot be cured by what is right in America.” (President Bill Clinton)

Since the Tragic shooting in Michigan on November 30th that took the lives of four Oxford HS students and injured 7 others, political opportunists have wasted little time weaponizing the situation and crafting their talking points.

But my thoughts today aren’t about politics.

Please click here to listen to the 6-minute audio version of this article from the Success is a Choice podcast network.

My thoughts on the Oxford tragedy aren’t about who’s right, who’s wrong, who’s to blame, or even how this could have ever happened in the first place.

DeAnna Price Sets an American Record

The 2021 Tokyo Olympics are just around the corner and athletes everywhere are seeing the rewards and fruit of their years of sacrifice and hard work.

This is especially true in the individual sports – gymnastics, swimming and diving, and track and field come to mind immediately. As Americans, Track and field is a sport that has long held our fascination.

We love powerful athletes. We love fast athletes.  We love the fact that the best can be measured by objective means.

There are no playing time issues. If you think you are better than someone else, then this can be proven by throwing farther, jumping higher, or running faster.

That is why what happened in the hammer throw competition at the U.S. Track and Field Trials is so awesome and so impressive.

DeAnna Price set an American record with her throw, which also happened to be the second-best in history.

Help Your Athletes Deal with the Haters

Tom Brady dismantled the defending champs and Vegas favorites in Super Bowl 55 to become a seven-time champion. Even though he is my guy, I am afraid I picked the Kansas City Chiefs to repeat and defeat Brady’s Buccaneers.

He had no idea I had picked against him, nor would he have cared.

However, he is no stranger to doubters.

It definitely is strange to see so many haters, doubters, and critics of Tom Brady when he is essentially the unquestioned GOAT – greatest of all time.

We as adults definitely don’t deal with doubters and haters as well as we should sometimes, so there is no question that our athletes will struggle with it.

Since the GOAT has haters, we all will have haters and those who doubt us.

Knowledge vs. Wisdom

I don’t remember the context but the other day I told my mother-in-law that “Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit but wisdom is knowing not to put it into a fruit salad.” She then proceeded to find a magnet that had that saying on it. It is on our refrigerator at home. Hopefully she just thought it was a neat saying and wasn’t trying to tell me something – but, I digress. [Read more…]

Be Kind to Everyone

Mark Twain said it best when he stated that “Kindness is a gift that the deaf can hear and the blind can see.”

Ellen Degeneres came under fire when she was caught on camera at a nationally televised Dallas Cowboys game sitting next to former U.S. President George Bush. It seems that some people are so angry and disagreeable that they think everyone else should be also.

It got so bad that Ellen had to address it on her show the next day.

Seeing Turtles

As a college student, I spent my summers as a life guard and camp counselor. During the weekends, the camp director would take the staff for boat rides around the lake. It seemed like every five minutes, he said, “See that turtle over there” or “Look at that turtle sunny itself on that log”. I don’t think I saw a turtle before he saw it at any point during that entire summer. Funny thing is that I also never saw a turtle on my own when I went out on the boat out without him.
