Choose to be better

“You either get bitter or you get better. It’s that simple. You either take what has been dealt to you and allow it to make you a better person, or you allow it to tear you down. The choice does not belong to fate, it belongs to you.” (Josh Shipp)

At 27 years of age, I was the youngest women’s basketball head coach at the NCAA level. Four years later, I was allowed to take my talents elsewhere.

I got resigned.

How kind of them to let me voluntarily resign.

No matter how you spin it, I was fired.

The Skinny Mirror

“Your life doesn’t get better by chance, it gets better by change.” (Jim Rohn)

One of my favorite shows is the Emmy Award-winning show “Shark Tank”.

BORED Yet?

“In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity.” (Albert Einstein)

You’ve stocked up on more toilet paper than one person should own at one time.

You’re starting to wonder if your hands will ever smell like something other than hand sanitizer.

You’re binge-watching shows you would never be caught dead admitting to viewing.

You’re watching all of ESPN’s 30 for 30’s again.

Sound familiar?

BORED yet?

Goals for 2020

“The best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago.  The second best time is now.”  (Chinese Proverb)

The year 2020 should be your best year ever.  Do you plan on setting some “New Year’s Resolutions”.  Resolutions are really just goals that we set for ourselves.  The following is a list of 25 of my favorite quotes about achieving goals.  I hope that some of these inspire you to achieve your goals for 2020.

3 Things You Can Do with the Past

Everyone has a past.  Often times, the things that have happened to us shape our future.  We can do three things with our past.  We can LIVE in the past, we can DWELL on the past or we can LEARN from the past.  Whichever category you fall into may go a long way toward determining your future.

Just be careful not to end up like Uncle Rico from Napoleon Dynamite in the following video clip . . .

Pearl of Wisdom

Have you ever received a pearl of wisdom? You probably have but might not have thought of it in that way. This might be a phrase that you are unfamiliar with. Webster’s dictionary defines the phrase pearl of wisdom as a wise word or statement. It also goes on to say that it is sometimes humorous. The example it gives is “A crowd of reporters gathered around the coach after the game to hear him dispense his usual pearls of wisdom.”

5 Things to Do When You Join the “I Got Fired” Club

“Hey, Jamy, do you have a minute?”

This was the question the athletic director asked me as I was getting ready to take my college basketball team on a team-building experience.

It was early January and school had not yet started.

Little did I know that in the next few minutes, I would be receiving my invitation to a well-known club that has plenty of members all across the country.

“Jamy, we are going to go in a different direction at the end of the year and you will not be returning as our head coach.”

And just like that, as one of the younger head coaches at the NCAA level, I was a card-carrying member of the “I Got Fired” club.

Dead Right

“When you talk, you are only repeating what you already know; but when you listen you may learn something new.” (Dalai Lama)
One day in high school, I was walking down the sidewalk with my mother.  We needed to cross the street.  Instead of going to the intersection and crossing at the cross walk, I decided to do it sooner since I figured I could make it before the next car went by.  My mother grabbed my arm and pulled me back.
“What are you doing?  There are cars coming”, said my mother.
“Don’t worry mom”, I replied confidently.  “Pedestrians have the right of way”.
“Yeah and you’ll be DEAD RIGHT”, she retorted.

7 Underrated Books All Leaders Should Read

“Not all readers are leaders but all leaders are readers.” (Harry S. Truman)

We must continually learn and one of the best ways is to read books.  I have previously posted some books for coaches and books for leaders.  Many of these books are by very popular authors and are on most bookshelves across the nation.

However, I have put together a list of 7 books that you might not have heard of but can help you maximize your potential influence and increase your leadership skills.
