Matter of Perspective

“At Harvard they labeled me a jock.  In the NFL they considered me intellectual.”
(Pat McInally, former NFL player)

A story is told of a husband and wife sitting at a table at the husband’s high school reunion.  He keeps staring at a drunken lady swigging her drink as she sat alone at a nearby table.

The wife asked, “Do you know her?”

“Yes,” the husband signed, “She’s my old girlfriend.  I understand that she took to drinking right after we split up all those years ago, and I hear she hasn’t stopped since.”

“I can’t believe it!” the wife said. “Who would think a person could go on celebrating that long?”

Perspective.  We all see things differently.  Even husbands and wives.  Come to think of it . . . especially husbands and wives!

Anyways, moving on . . .

Change the World Without Spending a Dime

“Be the change you want to see in the world.” (Gandhi)
How often are you or someone around you negative about society, other people, or the world in general?  If only you had the power to change things.  If only you had money like Bill Gates, you could make a difference in life.  Well, the truth is that you can make a difference in this world…and it doesn’t have to cost a thing. LOL Chicago Bulls Part 2

“Discipline yourself and others won’t need to.” (John Wooden)
“He who angers you, controls you.” (Elizabeth Kenny)

The 2017-18 NBA Season is still a day away for the Chicago Bulls but you are probably already laughing out loud and shaking your head about ‘da Bulls.

But the LOL I am referring to is a LACK OF LEADERSHIP.

It’s deja vu all over again. I wrote about the Chicago Bulls last season and their lack of leadership. I pointed out how the star players were not leading like they should. I still believe 100% that was the case.

Now we have a Chicago Bulls power forward punching another Chicago Bulls power forward. Nikola Mirotic is in the hospital with a concussion and a broken face as a result of teammate Bobby Portis’ punch.

Everyone Communicates; Few Connect

“The ability to deal with people is as purchasable a commodity as sugar or coffee and I will pay more for that ability than for any other under the sun.” (John D. Rockefeller)

My brother and I can chat for 30 minutes on the phone and when I hang up, I can’t answer any questions from my wife about my brother’s family or what’s really going on in his life.  But, boy can I tell you his opinion on Michigan football or the Detroit Tigers. [Read more…]

How do I get my teammates to listen to me?

In our most recent Student-Athlete Leadership Team meeting, a student asked a question that had the rest of the group nodding in agreement and adding their two-cents worth to the conversation.

“How do I get my teammates to listen to me”?

There are many variations to this question, but they all come down to student-athletes wanting to influence their teammates in some way.  John Maxwell, the #1 leadership expert in the world, says that “Leadership is influence.  Nothing more, nothing less.”

Leadership Equals Influence

Influence concept.

Leadership guru, John Maxwell, says that “Leadership is influence and influence is leadership, nothing more, nothing less.” Many people mistakenly think that leadership is a title. Titles may give a person some prestige or artificial power, but true leadership involves the amount of influence that a person has. Maxwell further states that a leader without followers is just a person going for a long walk. [Read more…]

The Influence of a Leader

(editor’s note:  originally published on December 5, 2012)

With the recent death of Rick Majerus (25 years as a head coach at Marquette, Ball State, Utah, St. Louis and only had one losing season), story after story was devoted to retelling his life story and what kind of impact he had on others.  It certainly got me thinking again about what kind of influence we have on those around us.
