From 1923-1930, Bobby Jones won 13 major championships in golf. His record was unmatched until 1973 when it was finally broken by Jack Nicklaus. One time, in a championship match that he was playing in, Jones drove the ball into the woods. As he was looking for the ball, he accidentally nudged it. Although no one saw him move the ball, he penalized himself one stroke (according to the rules), which caused him to lose the match by that margin. Afterward, when reporters praised him for his integrity, he responded that they might as well praise him and congratulate him for not robbing a bank.
Bad Food
“People ask me how I stay so positive after losing my legs … I simply ask them how they stay so negative with theirs.” (Ssgt Johnny “Joey” Jones)
There is a story of a monk who was allowed to say only two words every three years.
After the first three years, he met with his order’s Brother Superior and said, “Uncomfortable bed!”
Who’s On First?
Poor Abbott. Poor Costello. In the classic sketch Who’s On First, they heard each other’s words but just couldn’t seem to understand what each other was saying.
It’s no secret that we all desire to be listened to and we all want to be understood.
I am right. You are wrong. Why should I listen to you? Wait, what?!? You don’t understand what I’m saying? How is that even possible?
In the book, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, Stephen Covey said, “If you’re like most people you probably seek first to be understood; you want to get your point across. And in doing so, you may ignore the other person completely, pretend that you’re listening, selectively hear only certain parts of the conversation, or attentively focus on only the words being said, but miss the meaning entirely. So why does this happen?”

5 Tips for Better Communication
“Half the world is composed of people who have something to say but can’t, and the other half who have nothing to say but keep on saying it.” (ROBERT FROST)“If we were supposed to talk more than we listen, we would have two tongues and one ear.” (MARK TWAIN)

3 Ways to Make Your Boss Better
We all have a boss. We all answer to someone. Board of directors, supervisor, coach, parents or wife. Even the president of the United States has a boss in the form of millions of citizens.
We may not be in as crazy a situation like the worker in the following video, but you may see some similarities in this “Office Space” clip. If you are like me, then you’ve had bosses that have been good and bosses that have needed some improvement.
5 Things to Do When You Join the “I Got Fired” Club
“Hey, Jamy, do you have a minute?”
This was the question the athletic director asked me as I was getting ready to take my college basketball team on a team-building experience.
It was early January and school had not yet started.
Little did I know that in the next few minutes, I would be receiving my invitation to a well-known club that has plenty of members all across the country.
“Jamy, we are going to go in a different direction at the end of the year and you will not be returning as our head coach.”
And just like that, as one of the younger head coaches at the NCAA level, I was a card-carrying member of the “I Got Fired” club.
When Preparation Meets Opportunity
![]()
You’ve probably heard of guys like Tom Brady, Joe Montana, John Elway, Terry Bradshaw, and Peyton Manning. These are some of the best quarterbacks in the history of the National Football League. But none of them – or anyone else for that matter – has ever done what Ryan Fitzpatrick has accomplished through the first 3 weeks of the NFL season. Ryan Fitzpatrick (“FitzMagic” as he is known) has thrown for more than 400 yards in all three games. No NFL quarterback has ever thrown for 400 yards in three straight games. Ever!
5 Things I Wish I Knew As A Young Coach
As a college basketball coach for nearly 20 years, I had many experiences that I was proud of. But, I also made my share of mistakes, especially early in my career. Now that I have left coaching to work with teams as a leadership trainer and consultant, I look back on my career and offer up five things that I wish I knew when I first started out in coaching.
Speak like a Champ
“There are two types of speakers: Those who get nervous and those who are liars.” (Mark Twain)
My 6th grade year was coming to a close. It had been a good year.
I had won my fair share of kickball games at recess. My “Killer B’s” tag team won homemade wrestling belts at our improvised events during lunch. And maybe most memorably, I received my first kiss from a girl not named “Mom”.
But there was one thing left to do…
